The Activities Department “themed event” during the month of April was our “April Showers with Neil Yockey.” What makes this event so special is that it was planned and implemented by our Activities Intern, Taryn Hilsmeyer. Taryn is earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Heath Services and had chosen to plan the themed party as part of her internship project.
Taryn worked collectively with the Recreation Director to schedule various days for craft activities in the month of April. During craft groups residents worked on creating centerpieces to be used for the party (pictured left). Taryn also worked on designing decorations for the walls and during crafts assisted residents in decorating large umbrellas to be used for mural pieces along the dining room (below).
While one side of the Dining Room was decorated with the umbrellas designed by the residents in craft groups, the other side was decorated in a larger mural depicting a meadow with a pond, raindrops, flowers, and more umbrellas designed by our residents. Taryn utilized resources at the public library to cut the shapes needed for the mural. The mural was designed cooperatively with the help of Taryn, Activities staff members, and volunteers from the Jesus Christ Church of Latter Day Saints.
Taryn also scheduled a new performer to play for this event, Neil Yockey, a talented bluegrass musician who after playing for our residents during this party has now become part of our monthly music rotation!
Behind the scenes, our intern budgeted for the party, completed all of the shopping, and selected and assembled the fun party food – dirt cups with Gummy worms! Overall, Taryn planned a successful party – with great music, creative party food, and a beautiful environment we enjoyed celebrating Springtime with our residents!
The Activities Department would like to thank Taryn for all of her hard work and wish her good luck as she pursues her career following her completion of her internship!
