National Nursing Home Week Events 2018

“National Nursing Home Week” is a week long event held in May that celebrates the positive and caring relationship between residents and staff in the health care industry.   During National Nursing Home Week the Activity Department holds a special event daily for the residents,  the staff participate in games, and the staff are also provided with food each day.

Newburgh Healthcare’s chosen theme for National Nursing Home Week 2018 was “Camping.”  The Dining Room was decorated in a “camping” theme, with at woodland inspired mural.

Each Unit chose a name for their camp – East Unit was “Camp Peppermint” and the West Unit named themselves “Camp Sparkles”.  The Unit names were inspired by the personality of residents who reside on the Units.

East Unit – Camp Peppermint

West Unit – Camp Sparkles

Currently, the Activity Department is participating in a study with the Southwest Indiana Collaborative for Performance Improvement.  In the study,  Activity Directors must meet the goal of incorporating a variety of “Expressive Arts” into programming each month.  The Activity Department kicked off the expressive arts project by incorporating the arts into each of the events for National Nursing Home Week!

 Day 1

Camp Counselor Day
Monday, May 14th

Staff members are encouraged to dress up each day of National Nursing Home Week to make everything more exciting for the residents.  Monday’s theme was “Camp Counselor Day.”  The themed activity for the residents that day was “Movement & Exercise” by the campfire and the “Name that Tune – Camping Songs” game.  These activities incorporated the expressive art of movement/dance and music.

The residents created rain sticks to use for the activity during craft groups in May.

Lifeguard Day

Day 3

Scout Day
Wednesday, May 16th

During the third day of National Nursing Home Week, the residents from “Camp Sparkles” and “Camp Peppermint” competed in a variety of camping games, including Hillbilly Golf, Duck Hunting, Washers, and Fishing.  The residents were given headbands to wear while competing – red and white for Camp Peppermint, and sparkled headbands for Camp Sparkles!

In the afternoon residents enjoyed “Music and S’more’s with Therese McKannon.”  Facility owner, Bruce Baker, even got in on the fun, posing for a picture with the scouts!

Day 4

Forest Animal Day
Thursday, May 17th

To continue celebrating the expressive arts – this time the “dramatic arts,” in the afternoon on Thursday the activity staff (dressed as animals) entertained residents with some jokes, skits, and improvised comedy.  However, it was the morning event, “Music with Monte Skelton” that was the highlight of the day.

The residents were served hot chocolate – but not just any hot chocolate.  They were able to choose from four different flavors!  The table centerpieces for the party were small campfires (lit by tea lights) and little woodland animals made by our residents during craft groups in May.

Day 5

Every activity was fun but the highlight of National Nursing Home Week is always the animal event!  This year, Lil’ Rexing’s Pony Express brought a variety of farm animals to visit our residents, including a cow, donkey, goat, and rabbit.  It was raining, so we welcomed the animals indoors.  It’s not every day you see a cow in a Dining Room!
