The Activity Department throws a special event each day of National Nursing Home Week. “National Nursing Home Week” is a week long event established by the American Health Care Association. Held in May, it celebrates the positive and caring relationship between residents and staff in the health care industry and recognizes the differences made to each other’s lives.
The first event held in celebration of National Nursing Home Week was the “RootBeerFloat Party with the TCB Country Band” held Monday, May 14th. Root beer floats were served to both residents and staff during this event, and we enjoyed classic country tunes played by our visiting vocal artist.
Throughout the week, Newburgh Healthcare not only held parties for our residents, but also had a variety of games for staff to compete in with the opportunity to win prizes at the end of the week-long celebration. Staff were also encouraged to dress in “themed clothing” in keeping with the week’s events, including: Country Dress, Luau Dress, Patriotic Dress, Sports Dress, and Crazy Hats. Both residents and staff were served food daily during the theme parties. On Thursday, May 17th the Dietary staff and Maintenance staff grilled out burgers and served other picnic/cookout style foods during the meal hour for both staff and and all residents at the facility.
One of the parties held for our residents during National Nursing Home Week included the “Walk Across America Party” held Wednesday, May 16th. During this event Joey Fiedler, Physical Therapy Assistant, addressed our residents to explain that we were once again kicking off a “walking program” in which staff would be keeping track of the miles each of our residents walk with the goal of reaching St. Louis, Missouri in two months of walking.
This program, designed by our Therapy Department and implemented cooperatively with our Activities Department and Restorative Nursing encourages our residents to continue participating in walking to maintain their strength and stability.
We would like to thank all staff who assisted with parties, who designed games for staff, and who helped serve food during National Nursing Home Week 2012!
