National Nursing Home Week” is a week long event held in May that celebrates the positive and caring relationship between residents and staff in the health care industry. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebration was quite different than in the past.
Traditionally during National Nursing Home Week the Activity Department holds a special event daily in a group format for the residents. This year was all about improvisation. The Activity Department chose a “sports theme” for nursing home week and each day residents participated in game competitions; not together in groups, but individually. Residents either participated alone in the Lounge or in their own rooms. At the end of the day residents were told how they scored against their peers on each unit and were given medals if they were in the top three or if they won the sports-themed Bingo activities! The activity staff sanitized equipment between each resident. It meant for long days for our staff to do everything individually, but it was worth it in order to allow residents to retain some sense of “normalcy” during the pandemic.
The activity staff made special decorations for the themed week using computer print-outs and the laminator. Staff then decorated each resident’s doorway.

Mother’s Day was actually the beginning of National Nursing Home week, and that morning before the hallway service Activity staff had residents compete in golf competitions.
